What are the behavioral & emotional effects of moderate nicotine (cigs) smoking?

nmcollegestudent asked:

I am not at all concerned about getting cancer–I am young, I only smoke 3-6 light cigarrettes a day, and I plan to stop soon. Being a C.R.PhT and having my father as a PharmD, I know that there will be incredible pharmaceutical treatments for it. Chantix came out not too long ago, but is only a little more effective than placebo. Nevertheless, it is the sign of a start. I mean, they’ve already got a cocaine vaccination.

Anyways, I do play tennis and get a little winded occassionally. My girlfriend does not exactly like the way I smell. But these are all irrelevant to my question as stated above.

I am aware that nicotine absorbtion is quite rapid (when smoked) and that it temporarily decreases serotonin levels while increasing nor-epinephrine (nor-adrenaline) as well as dopamine. I know it seems to relax me when I’m tense (and it makes me look WAY cool :) jk), but that it a relatively benign effect–and it is beneficial.

So my main question: Am I unaware of any possible behavioral and/or emotional effects that I may experience? Remember: moderate use from the age of 17-25.

One more thing…if I stopped, would I feel better overall? If not overall–in what areas? I do take Xanax for anxiety–mostly for social situations and alprazolam (Xanax) also relieves depressive symptoms.

I am in quite good health: I eat well, I exercise 3-4x/week, I take multivitamins in morning, 6′1″ and about 170. Yep, I’m on the slim side

All feedback, positive and negative, is greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks guys..

The worst behavioral and emotional effects come not from the nicotine, but from the lack of nicotine when you go through withdrawal, and if you’re a regular smoker, you go through the beginning stages of withdrawal several times a day.

Anxiety, nervousness, “antsiness,” distraction….

When you do get nicotine in your system, you’re right back to normal. You may seem more relaxed, but that feeling is fleeting.
