hep c treatment and using drugs?

Eric E asked:

My buddy has hep c and is going for pegetron treatment, the problem is he won’t stop using cocaine. If there is anybody who would know the consequences of this, please write here as he has been reseraching on yahoo questions and answers, and has been doing a whole lot of research on this treatment on the internet as well. So far nothing is really showing up using cocaine and doing this treatment at the same time and he is thinking it is ok to use drugs and have treatment. Thanks in advance for answers.

Cocaine is very harmful to the liver.
A simple drug for treating flu is also doing some harm to the liver.
Why spend so much money and effort on treament ?
If you really care, you know what to do.
Good luck.

I attempted the combo, Interferon and Ribaviron treatment and it’s a bitch without using recreational drugs on top. If he uses cocaine while on treatment, there’s a much bigger risk of failure.

He sure is putting a boatload of money into something that has less of a chance of working if he continues on the path he is on. Cocaine and the liver don’t get along together, plus that is probably how he got it in the first place…people have been known to pass along hep c from sharing the tube they are snorting it through especially if it tends to cut the inside of their nose. The mucus membranes in the nose are very fragile.

So even if he does stop while on treatment then starts again when finished, he could risk reinfection. Anyway, he can continue to do cocaine, but it will drop his chances of a successful treatment by more than half.

Not only does cocaine give the liver trouble, but it also can suppress immune system function…by messing with his glands especially the thyroid. It’s also going to make his side effects worse, in which in turn he will probably try to self medicate with the cocaine and it will be an endless circle.

All and all, it’s not a good idea – addiction can be difficult to deal with, unfortunately it will effect the outcome of his treatment more than likely in negative instead of the positive. If he can’t stop totally, he should at least try to cut waaaaay back.

Disclaimer – I’m not a doctor, nor have I been a drug addict, but I’ve been through treatment and it’s definitly not a party. I can see why he would still want to use, seriously though…it’s just not a good idea if he wants to get rid of Hep C.
