I have a friend that is fighting addiction to drugs. Are there any songs out there that can help him fight?

Sha Nay Nay asked:

He is a good friend of mine who has a history of cocaine use in the past and due to some personal issues (divorce, unemployed, etc) has chosen to go back to using drugs. I want to help him, but I do know that I can’t help him unless he wants it. Are there any songs that talk about getting help and enlisting friends to help? I just started a search and all I can find are songs that talk about using not helping to stop.
help!!!

The only real music that would be good for him to hear are people in Addiction groups crying as they confront their addictions. You would be better searching for the mentioned groups. I suspect, however he is already toasted.

Why are you so set on the song thing??? If he’s really that bad of an addict, he shouldn’t need a song to convince him to get help..

If he’s like 99% of the population, having loved ones tell him how his drug use is effecting them is substantially more effective than playing a song by a random musician.

You can help him by gathering a group of people (similar to an intervention) and telling him how his drug use has effected all of you. If he’s hitting rock bottom, refer him to a rehab facility. I’m going to leave you two links that might help…the first one is information on cocaine abuse and what you can do to help. They have a chat program on their website which might help you make a decision if you’re unsure about rehab. The second link is an actual rehab facility. Maybe he’s not at this point, but if he keeps relapsing he needs to be in an environment AWAY from any dealers/places where he can score any.

Since you specifically asked about songs (which I still don’t think will help)..I’ll give you some.

1. Cranberries – Salvation. This song portrays doing drugs in a negative light.

2. Sublime – Pool Shark (Acoustic). Acoustic is better because you can clearly hear the lyrics. The singer, Bradley Nowell, talks about his drug addiction and how one day he is going to “lose the war”. He eventually does OD on heroin in real life.

3. Jimmy Eat Wolrd – Drugs or Me. Jim Adkins, the singer, states how a person is completely different when they’re on drugs and has a strong negative message against drug use.

4. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Scar Tissue and Under the Bridge. Both songs deal with the singer overcoming his addiction to drugs, specificially heroin. Under the Bridge is the stronger message..

Hope all this advice helps. Good luck to you and your friend.
