Does cannabis prohibition make any sense to any of you?

Colin H asked:

Since the idea of freedom to choose what goes into your body isn’t reasonable to many when it comes to illicit substances, I’m going to single out the cannabis plant. The fact that it is not physically addictive, and not toxic enough to possibly overdose on are two very important facts that are extremely downplayed by proponents of prohibition. It can cause psychological dependence, but literally anything can cause psychological dependence. That kind of dependence is based on multiple factors, but the main two are how much pleasure said object or activity personally brings someone, and how much willpower they possess. Whether you like the feeling of cocaine or not, your body will crave it. With cannabis people’s bodies aren’t literally craving it, they consciously like the effects and that is why they seek more. That is also why thrill seekers wish to go skydiving again, or someone wants to play a video game again. To single cannabis out as addictive for anyone is like saying those two activities, or any other, will be equally pleasurable and likely to make a habit for anyone who engages in them. Physical dependence is real addiction, cannabis can only make a habit, like literally anything else can. It all depends on the individual, and how much they personally enjoy the effects of cannabis. To treat it as dangerous and addictive to the point of making it illegal for everyone is foolish and costly.

This sounds more like a rant than a question. Still, I’ll go ahead and say that no, it makes very little sense for pot to be illegal but not alcohol.

It makes since if you have a stake in the over crowded prisons. It’s called the prison industrial complex and business is booming!

I agree totally with you. If alcohol is legal why can’t marijuana be too? People abuse things more often when they are illegal they become a counter culture taboo that becomes the cool thing to do when you’re 14. If it becomes legal then more responsibility can be taught and that would be a good thing.

The border security sucks as it is. If marijuana is made legal there would be a lot more people entering the country illegally.

The argument that making it legal would at least be a way to regulate doesn’t hold a whole lot of water. In order to make it cost effective the government would have to tax the hell out of it, and people would continue to just grow it illegally like they do now.

I can’t stand the argument that alcohol is legal so that means this should be legal, too. The alcohol problem in this country is out of control and the only reason why that is not illegal, too, is because there are millions of addicts who would go insane. The government is proceeding with caution with marijuana because they do not want to make the same mistake.

We are a fat and lazy enough people as it is. We don’t need more people wasting their lives sitting around on the couch, when they could be out there doing bigger and better things.

And you all whine about “oh, there are worse things” and “oh, it’s not addictive” and “it’s about liberties” but behind your conjured-up little talking points, all you want to do smoke it without getting in trouble.

It makes sense to so called drug warriors who are making millions in unsupervised forfeiture dollars confiscated from American citizens. It makes sense to the thousands of DEA troops who are paid to eradicate grows, and bust medical marijuana clinics. It make sense to running-scared politicians who pretend to be hard on drugs because they have no other policy points worth making. It makes sense to the neo-con nation who uses cannabis prohibition as a way of keeping our prison businesses overflowing with detainees, and minority populations disenfranchised. It makes sense to those who would control the minds and behaviors of others because they falsely believe doing so makes the world a safer place for consumerism.

It doesn’t make sense to me. But I am glad you asked, because one of the big problems is that this is not a topic that is discussed in the mainstream media. We arrested almost 800,000 people last year for cannabis possession alone. What a waste of resources! That is 5% of all arrests for everything. So 5 out of every 100 police officers are doing nothing but arresting people for having pot on their persons. Does that make anyone safer?

We have to start talking about this issue. Things are totally out of control. The “War on Drugs” causes so much harm, and has not achieved any of its stated goals. Use of illicit drugs is higher here than in any other country. In fact, in places like the Netherlands where you can go to a cannabis cafe, without repercussions. the rate of use is much lower than in the States.

I can’t believe how many people think smoking pot makes you stupid and lazy. Watching television makes you stupid and lazy. Should we ban that? Frankly, the Federal Government has been lying to and brainwashing people who have not realized yet that they are being duped. Personally, I think we should demand that the US Govt. save 400,000 lives each year by mandating that tobacco companies substitute cannabis for tobacco in their cigarette produducts. (Yes, cannabis causes cancer cells to die, and is a neuroprotectant, and an anti-oxidant, and kills drug-resistant microbes. — Bet they don’t teach those little facts in that asinine D.A.R.E. program.)

And that, by the way, is a true rant!
